Which Wax Do You Like?

Which Wax Do You Like?

Wax is at the heart of a candle and the different waxes have their own characteristics. Understanding this helps both candle makers and candle lovers choose a wax that aligns with their values, aesthetic and sensory desires.

Let’s have a look at the most common waxes on the market: paraffin, soy, coconut soy and beeswax.  We’ll also look at what makes each wax unique plus a take a glimpse at gel wax.

Paraffin Wax: The Bold Choice

Paraffin wax is perhaps the most traditional and widely used candle wax in the world. It is made from petroleum and is a byproduct of the crude oil refining process.  Paraffin has been used in candle making since the 19th Century.

 Properties:

  • Texture & Appearance: Paraffin wax is smooth and opaque. It holds dyes and fragrance oils well so it is a favourite for vibrant, strongly scented candles.
  • Burn Performance: It melts cleanly and evenly when properly formulated and produces a strong hot and cold scent throw.
  • Scent Throw: Paraffin is unmatched in how strongly it can carry fragrance.

However, because paraffin originates from petroleum, it’s not a renewable or biodegradable wax which makes it less eco-friendly than plant-based alternatives like soy. Paraffin candles produce a small amount of soot when burned. For many candle lovers, this environmental consideration tilts the scales towards more sustainable waxes, such as soy and coconut soy.

Best for:
Those wanting highly scented candles with a strong flame.

Beeswax: Nature’s Subtle Treasure

Beeswax is one of the oldest-known candle-making waxes around. The Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all used bees wax to make candles and ceremonial lights. Today, it is cherished for its natural purity, golden glow and its subtle honeyed fragrance.

Properties:

  • Texture & Appearance: Beeswax ranges from pale gold to deep amber with a natural sheen that feels warm and organic. It is firm and self-supporting making it perfect for pillars and taper candles.
  • Burn Performance: It burns slowly and cleanly: often burning longer than most other waxes. Beeswax candles naturally purify the air by releasing negative ions that bind to airborne particles, ie, it cleans up dust and odours.
  • Scent Throw: Beeswax carries its own fragrance.  It has a delicate, sweet scent reminiscent of honey and wildflowers. It can hold added fragrance, however, its natural aroma may subtly influence the blend.

Beesw ax is more expensive than other waxes and can be harder to blend with oils or colours so it’s best appreciated in its natural form with its honeyed scent and golden hue.

Best for:
Those who appreciate tradition, craftsmanship and the gentle beauty of natural materials.

Soy Wax: The Natural Modern Favourite

Soy wax was introduced in the 1990s as a renewable alternative to paraffin and it changed the candle world. Soy wax is made from soybean oil.  It is biodegradable and sustainable and has become increasingly popular among eco-conscious makers and buyers.

 Properties:

  • Texture & Appearance: Soy wax is creamy and smooth with a soft, natural hue.
  • Burn Performance: Soy burns slower and cooler than paraffin, therefore, soy candles often last 30–50% longer. The slower burn rate makes it perfect for container candles where longevity is sought-after.
  • Scent Throw: It has a moderate to strong scent throw. Soy wax holds fragrance well but releases it more gently creating a softer, more enveloping ambiance.

Soy wax can sometimes develop what is called “frosting”.  Frosting is a white crystalline pattern that appears on the wax and is due to the candle’s cooling process. Frosting is purely cosmetic and a hallmark of the wax’s natural composition.

Pure soy can sometimes be too soft or temperamental in warm climates. Many makers use soy wax blends that contain small additions of natural oil or vegetable waxes.  It’s a way to improve scent throw, reduce frosting and achieve a creamier texture.

Best for:
Those who value clean, long burns and natural ingredients. Soy candles are perfect for those who prefer a subtle scent over a powerful one.

Coconut Soy Wax: The Luxe Hybrid

Coconut soy wax is a newer generation of wax designed for elegance and performance. It is created by blending hydrogenated coconut oil with soy wax.  It combines sustainability, smoothness and exceptional scent throw.  Coconut soy wax is the choice here at Casa Lusia.

Properties:

  • Texture & Appearance: Buttery smooth with an almost satin finish. Coconut soy wax is softer than pure soy but holds its shape well in containers. It’s usually off-white to ivory in colour and lends a sophisticated, high-end appearance to candles.
  • Burn Performance: Coconut soy wax burns very cleanly and evenly with minimal soot. It has a very slow burn rate which allows for longer candle enjoyment and better fragrance diffusion.
  • Scent Throw: It has a very good scent throw.  Many makers find coconut soy wax provides one of the best hot and cold scent throws among natural waxes. Its creamy texture helps disperse fragrance oils evenly throughout the wax and that releases scent consistently over time.

Coconut soy wax can be more expensive than soy or paraffin.  The price reflects the wax’s premium quality and sustainable sourcing.

Best for:
Those seeking an eco-luxury experience. It is an ideal choice for spa-like spaces.

Gel Wax: The Transparent Wonder

If you want to be really modern, consider gel wax.  It isn’t a wax at all but a blend of mineral oil and polymer resin and has a translucent, glass-like appearance.

Properties:

  • Appearance: Clear, allowing decorative inclusions such as crystals, shells or glitter.
  • Performance: Burns hot and long, though scent throw varies.
  • Safety: Must be carefully formulated to ensure a stable burn and prevent overheating.

Best for:
Creative or novelty candles where transparency is part of the design.

Choosing the Right Wax for You

Selecting a candle wax isn’t just about performance.  It’s about mood, intention and personal values.

If you crave bold fragrance and bright light, paraffin remains the classic.
If you value natural simplicity and longevity, soy is your steadfast companion.
If you desire elegance with sustainability, coconut soy offers the best of both worlds.
If you treasure tradition and purity, beeswax glows with ancient grace.

If you want to be really modern, give gel wax a go.

Each wax has its own story and the perfect candle isn’t solely about scent or burn time.  It’s about the atmosphere the candle creates, the emotions it stirs and the quiet light it casts to create that perfect ambiance.
