19th-Century Candle Making: Inside the Factory

Long before scented soy candles, modern machinery and automated production lines, candle making was a demanding industrial trade. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, candle factories supplied homes, churches, businesses, ships and public buildings with one of life's most essential commodities: light.Stepping inside a candle factory before 1920 was an assault on the senses. The air carried the heavy scent of wax, animal fats, oils, steam and smoke. Machinery rattled continuously, workers moved with efficiency and rows upon rows of candles stretched across vast workrooms. It was a world where traditional craftsmanship met the growing power of industrial manufacturing.
The Factory Floor
A typical candle factory was divided into several sections, each dedicated to a specific stage of production. Raw materials arrived in bulk and were stored in large warehouses before being processed.
Earlier factories relied heavily on tallow, a rendered animal fat obtained from cattle and sheep. By the late nineteenth century, many manufacturers had transitioned to stearin and paraffin wax which produced cleaner-burning candles and were easier to work with on an industrial scale.
Large metal vats dominated the production areas. Here, waxes and fats were heated until liquid, creating enormous quantities of material ready for moulding. Steam-powered boilers often supplied the heat required to keep the wax flowing throughout the factory. The temperature inside these rooms could become stifling, particularly during summer months and workers spent long hours surrounded by heat, steam and the constant movement of machinery.
Making the Candles

The actual process of candle production depended on the type of candle being manufactured.
One of the oldest methods involved repeatedly dipping cotton wicks into molten wax. Workers suspended hundreds of wicks from large wooden frames and lowered them into heated vats. Each dip added another layer of wax. The process was repeated again and again until the desired thickness was achieved.
By the late nineteenth century, moulding machines had become increasingly common. These machines could produce hundreds or even thousands of candles far more quickly than traditional hand-dipping methods.
Rows of metal moulds were filled with molten wax while wicks were carefully positioned in the centre. Once cooled, the finished candles were removed, trimmed, inspected and prepared for packaging. Factories producing church candles, household candles or decorative candles often operated several different production systems simultaneously to meet varying customer demands.
The Workers
Candle factories employed a diverse workforce of men, women and sometimes older children, particularly before stricter labour regulations were introduced. Men typically worked in physically demanding roles involving boilers, machinery maintenance, transportation of raw materials and factory operations. These positions required strength and endurance especially when moving heavy barrels of wax or fuel.
Women frequently worked on the finishing lines where candles were inspected, trimmed, bundled, wrapped and packed for distribution. Their work demanded speed, accuracy and attention to detail. Working conditions could be difficult. Factory shifts often lasted ten hours or more and repetitive tasks were common. Safety standards varied greatly between factories and workers faced hazards ranging from hot wax burns to machinery accidents.
Despite these challenges, candle manufacturing provided employment for thousands of families during a period of rapid industrial growth.
Packaging and Distribution

Once completed, candles were carefully sorted according to size, quality and intended use. Bundles of household candles were tied together and packed into wooden crates. Larger church candles were individually wrapped to protect their surfaces during transport. Special decorative candles destined for affluent customers often received more elaborate packaging.
Factory labels highlighted important selling points such as brightness, cleanliness of burn and quality of wax. Manufacturers competed fiercely in growing domestic and international markets. Horse-drawn carts initially carried shipments to local retailers and railway stations. As transportation networks expanded, candles could be distributed across entire countries and exported overseas. By the early twentieth century, some large manufacturers were producing millions of candles annually.
The Coming of Electricity
One of the greatest challenges faced by candle factories was the arrival of new lighting technologies. Gas lighting had already reduced demand for candles in many urban centres during the nineteenth century. The spread of electric lighting posed an even greater threat.
Candles, however, did not disappear. Rural communities often lacked access to electricity and many households continued to rely on candles as a backup source of light. Churches, ceremonial events and religious institutions remained important customers.
Manufacturers adapted by producing higher-quality candles and expanding into specialty markets. Decorative candles, church candles and premium household candles became increasingly important product lines.
A Forgotten Industry
Today, it is difficult to imagine a world where entire factories operated solely to provide light yet before electricity became widespread, candle making was a significant industry employing thousands of workers and supplying an essential everyday product.
Inside an early 19th or 20th Century candle factory, heat, noise and hard work combined to transform raw materials into objects that illuminated homes and communities around the world. While modern candles are often purchased for fragrance, decoration or relaxation, their predecessors were products of necessity. The factories that produced them played a vital role in daily life, helping to light the world before the age of electricity.
